Wire Mesh Portraits: Seung Mo Park

A stunning series of portraits by South Korean artist Seung Mo Park made with layers of wire mesh. To proceed, the artist starts with a photograph which is superimposed over the mesh and lit up by a projector, and continues by meticulously cutting the wires one by one to allow the depth to reveal the details the portrait. Conceptually, Park's innovative pieces draw upon ideas of reality, illusion and existence. The name of both series and subject, MAYA, barely posses the materiality of sculpture and its ideas - nonetheless, the intangibility of this series questions traditional means of depicting the self.
